Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) was a quick project I worked on as the sole designer. I had only two weeks to plan, design and iterate the desktop and mobile wireframes for their new portal.

The main purpose of the site is to provide information around the foreign engagements scheme and forward users to the online notification portal and the public register.

Gathering of client requirements and organising it into the information architecture.

Upon iteration and client approval we move into the design phase.

Home Page Design

In the first iteration of the homepage, the information was displayed as chunks of text. This was not engaging and eye catching and users tend to skip over large bits of text.

This underwent a few iterations to ensure that the information is displayed in a structured manner and users are directed to the call to actions.

I decided to use bright colours to draw the eyes of the user to the call to actions, and use the blue branding colours to bring together different elements with more focus on iconography.

The public register is a database containing any foreign arrangements and decisions for which a State/Territory entity has given a notice.

The design changes were made from the first iteration to further differentiate sub arrangements VS arrangements. The third and fourth iteration of the design settled on using an accordion to make the information more concise at first glance. However this was unfortunately not technically feasible given the timeframe.

Mobile

Finally the mobile designs kept the theme of the desktop. Reorganised to be optimised for the mobile experience.
